Great fashion shows remain a thrilling experience. However, it is more thrilling and fulfilling when such shows benefit worthy causes. San Francisco Bay Area -based Asian American Cancer Support Network (AACSN), completed 2004 with a strong finish at its annual event Hatwalk 2004; which raises money and promotes awareness of the impact of cancer on Asian Americans and their families.
May Bakken, one of the founders and current president of the organization, explains that "Cancer is the leading cause of death among Asian and Pacific Islander women-and the second-leading among Asian and Pacifica Islander men -in this country. Despite this alarming statistic, there are a few cancer support groups addressing the specific needs of Asian Americans."
So, Hatwalk 2004 celebrated the value and importance of hats in bringing comfort to cancer patients. The highlight of the evening was the speech made by the renowned guest speaker and breast cancer survivor Susan Shinagawa. The gorgeous hats were all designed by volunteers and modeled by local talents including current Ms. Asian San Francisco, Annie Chang.
